Zig Zag

I've been noticing more and more lately an influx of Missoni-esque print, colours and patterns coming from our designers. I'm of two minds on this. First, I'm a die hard Missoni fan and wonder where the breach of intellectual property lies and when can we say that copying of these prints is no longer flattering but actually pilfering? On the other hand..... what the heck I LOVE these prints and however they get into my home I just don't care! A particular favourite of mine is the zig zag multi colour print. You can see this coming through in cushions, bedding and all sorts of homewares. It's a geometric wonder print that is timeless, striking and elegant whilst still packing a visual punch. Here's a few examples

(The real deal - swoon!)

and some pretty fabulous replicas....

Take me back to Kansas City : my love affair with Emerald Green

My new favourite colour is officially Emerald Green. This colour is hot hot hot! Seen filtering through fashion campaigns and the red carpet looks, I'm officially calling it - Emerald Green is the new 'IT' colour! Powerfully vibrant, sensual and soothing all at once, this colour looks fabulous paired with teal and fuschia or for a more conservative but striking look try it as an accent with a black and white palette. Here's some drool worthy pictures for you this Monday.....

(Get this look with our new Cameroon Feathered Head dress in store at our Coolum Beach Emporium- available in fuschia, turquoise, natural, white and black HEAVENLY!)

Wood on Wood

I'm oftened asked our thoughts in relation to combining different timber finishes throughout a home when selecting furniture. It's my thought that you are gridlocked by the timber finish that you select say for a dining table, needing to replicate this colour continuously throughout a space. I quite like a combination of timber colours and finishes to work back with one another preventing it from looking too matchy matchy. Of course you need to select these combinations carefully so not to make a patchwork quilt affect so I thought I'd share this image that I found with you that is a wonderful example of how light and dark timbers can co-exist in a space together and still look put together and sophisticated.

What do you think? xx

The not so wish list.....

Wednesday have turned into a bit of my wish list day on the blog but this week it's a not so wish list day - it's more of a splurge day! I thought you would all like to see my new artwork that I collected today from the gorgeous Putipula Gallery in Hasting Street. Watermelon Red has a great relationship with Gilli, sourcing from her for a number of our interior decorating projects. She always has a great mix of traditional and contemporary pieces and loves vivid colour as much as we do!

I love this piece for more contemporary feel and it instantly relaxes me reminding me of a spring we spent in Turkey many years ago with the countryside filled with fields of gorgeous swaying Poppies - straight away I have a smile on my face. To me, the mix of bold vibrant colour layered so intensely makes it such a happy piece. The artist is an elder, Mantuwa 'Felicity' Treacle from the Kaltjiti Arts Centre in Fregon South Australia. Very sadly, Mantuwa passed away earlier in the week from a long battle with cancer. It's comforting to know that her talent  lives on through her work. I feel very lucky having been able to secure such a beautiful piece for my home. xx

Turn it on it's head!

I simply love the house on the cover of this months House and Garden Magazine. It seems that in Australia we are very traditional in the way that we present the exterior of our homes. Take a look through any UK or Scandinavian design magazine and you seen an abundance of colour used as simple, understated highlights against a back drop of sophisticated and subdued base colour. Mustard, blue and red can often be seen as a highlight colour on a feature door, chimney or window frame hight it just gives it that POP! A refreshing visual experience. So when I saw the gorgeous royal blue architrave frames of the house on the cover this month, I was very happy. Still subtle and unobtrusive to the eye, however by being a little left of centre and contrary to the norm, this topsy turvy, simple addition breathes life and energy to the home and makes you wonder - what other refreshing delights are to be found inside? xx

This week I'm swooning over all things Peacock!  Wall art, soft furnishings, fabrics and flooring are all inspired by the motifs, colour and pattern of these magnificent creatures! Electric blues and emerald greens add a pop of colour to a room whilst still remaining as sophisticated and majestic as the creature themselves.Below I thought I'd share some of my inspiration hoping to kick start you all on my peacock fascination too!

The Fruits of our Labour

I thought I'd give you a sneak peak behind our latest interior project at the Hyatt Regency Coolum's exclusive gated community, The Lakes. I had so much fun throughout the planning phases of this project, our client was a dream, she was quite adventurous and loved colour as much as we did. Having spent many years working in the Middle East she wanted to bring a little bit of this part of her life to her holiday home here in Coolum. Watermelon Red project managed a medium sized renovation on the property conducting the furniture fitout and styling. After an exhausting and quite labour intensive few weeks, our latest baby was handed over the client. She and we are extremely happy with the results - I wonder what your thoughts are?

The storming of the Brain!

It's been a very creative week at Watermelon Red ! The start of any new interior decorating project is always fun, consulting with clients, brainstorming ideas, immersing ourselves in design, sourcing inspiration from the most unlikely of places and working our way towards a creative brief to present to our clients. Our latest project within the exclusive estates of the Hyatt Regency Coolum is going to be a lot of fun. Here's a glimpse into the beginning of our inspiration board - as I said, this one's going to be a lot of fun!
